Hi folks!
Today we have a very special show. We’re talking about Into That Fire, by author MJ Cates. Cates, however, is a pseudonym – and the author is well-known enough that they’re not doing TV or radio lest they be recognized. Instead we speak with the book’s editor, Anne Collins! It’s fair to call Anne a Big Deal in Canadian publishing. She’s the publisher of the Knopf Random Canada Publishing Group and has been a VP of the company that is now Penguin Random House Canada since 1998. She’s responsible for the publishing careers of about 350 Canadian authors of fiction and non-fiction, as well as publishing close roughly 175 international authors.
GET LIT is brought to you weekly via the gear, airwaves and resources of 93.3 CFMU FM in Hamilton, Ontario. We are a campus-based community radio station. Recently the Ford government has decided that those “crazy Marxist” student unions do not deserve support, and as such, student union funding is now an opt-in situation. (Don’t defend this, I’m in no mood to argue and don’t have room on this post to explain why you’re wrong, and why student union services need support).
I’ve been at CFMU for almost 20 years. We’ve watched it grow. We have kept our mandate at the fore, supporting local arts, music, charity, non-English speaking communities, under-represented music, the list goes on. We have the best campus radio website in the country. Yet now, we are looking at moving ahead into the past. Without funding, we could very likely lose half our funding, possibly more. Jobs will likely be lost. CFMU will not disappear, but it will struggle.
This is why I urge you to support 93.3 CFMU through this fundraiser. www.cfmu.ca/fundraising is where you go.
While I work at CFMU, GET LIT is a volunteer task. I’m not paid for the hours I spend reading a book every week, nor do I want to be paid. I do this to give back to the community that welcomed me so graciously when I first published in 2016. That’s how all our volunteer hosts feel. Let’s not yank the rug out from under them! If you appreciate what GET LIT does, consider a donation, because there’s 110-ish other programs on our station that are equally important to someone.
Thanks everyone.
